What's Happening

Hello San Diego,

The Day of the Dead is nearly upon us, and as such, there are a number of Día de Muertos–related events happening around town, including in City Heights, Encinitas, Oceanside, Barrio Logan, and Balboa Park, with more on the horizon... USD will hold an Arts and Culture Festival on Saturday. The House of Scotland will hold its annual Lawn Program on Saturday, and the House of Türkiye will hold its Lawn Program on Sunday.

Music and dance events include the Ballet Landscapes at the San Diego Museum of Art throughout the weekend. On Saturday: At the Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park, you can listen to a concert of music from The Phantom of the Opera. Also on Saturday, at Conrad Prebys, there will be a concert of Handel’s music composed while he was living in Rome. Celtic Thunder will perform at Sycuan. The ballet Giselle will be performed at CCA on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, the Haneen Choir will perform at the library in Poway. Next Wednesday, Japanese rocker Shintaro Sakamoto will perform at the Observatory. Next Friday: the One Love Festival will take place at "The Venue", Mariachi Rodriguez will perform at the newly opened Airport Terminal 1, Django's Jazz Caravan will perform at CCA, and Yelohill will perform at La Boom.

Film offerings (in addition to the films showing in local theaters) will be the San Diego Hong Kong Film Festival at the Digital Gym on Saturday, and next Tuesday, the silent film em>Cabinet of Dr. Caligari will be screened at the Central Library with live musical accompaniment by the Hausmann Quartet.

Theater options include: Witch, ongoing at Trinity Theatre Company; Copenhagen at Lamplighters; Spooky Shakespeare at MOPA; and Dracula at Innovation Family Community Theatre. Next weekend, the opera Pagliacci will be performed at the Civic Theatre.

A number of Asian comedians will be performing in San Diego with Irene Tu at Mic Drop tonight, Joe Wong at The Yellow Door (also tonight), and on Monday the DEI Comedy: Asian Women Comedians night at Mic Drop.

Crafty arts fans might enjoy the Día de los Muertos Sugar Skull Workshop in Chula Vista or the Shadowbox Shrine Workshop in Liberty Station. Both take place on Sunday.

Other events in San Diego include the Saturday Larry Itliong Community Breakfast honoring the activist, and the Capoeira Batizado celebration at Worldbeat, which will feature song and Brazilian Capoeira. On Tuesday, Thomas Schlesser will talk about his new book Mona's Eyes. Next Thursday, there will be a talk at UCSD on South Korean–U.S. Cooperation and North Korea Strategy. Also next Thursday, the Taste of the IRC dinner will raise funds for the International Rescue Committee humanitarian organization.

Lastly, the Worldview Project, which produces this newsletter every week (and does lots of other stuff too!), is a non-profit organization. Supporting cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and engagement has never been more critical than it is now. As you may have noticed, we don't annoy you with advertisements or constant fundraising appeals. But we need your support to continue to do what we do. In particular we are seeking our reader's help in funding the further development of our Cultures in the Classroom™ curriculum project to inspire children to connect with and appreaciate the wonder of cultures around the world. You can show your support by clicking on the "Donate to the WVP" button above and making a tax-deductible donation to the WVP. No donation is too small— even a dollar would be appreciated!

Recipe of the Month

Our Recipe of the Month is for Cuban Picadillo Habanero, a national dish of the island nation. Sautéed meat mixed with a multicultural blend of ingredients, this is an easy-to-make dish that is very satisfying.

CD of the Month

This month's International Music suggestion is **Cesaria Evora, Best Of**. Cesária Évora (1941–2011) was a legendary singer from Cape Verde, an island country off the coast of West Africa. Known as the “Barefoot Diva” because she often performed without shoes, she brought the traditional music of her homeland—morna—to a global audience. Cesária often performed barefoot in solidarity with poor women and children in Cape Verde. It became her trademark and a symbol of humility and authenticity.

Book of the Month

Our Book of the Month is **The Event** by Juan José Saer. Winner of the 1987 Nadal Prize and penned by an author lauded as "the most important Argentinian writer since Borges," The Event plunges the reader into the complex life of Blanco, a celebrated European telepathist who is exposed as a fraud and flees disgrace to the remote corners of Argentina.
